Tonight, NBC premiers our local champion, Friday Night Lights. I’ve already watched the entirety of this season, since it first ran on Dish Network in that deal they made to keep the show going. I’m not embarrassed to tell you that I am obsessed with this show. It is at the foremost of my intention to appear on it before its demise. It is crazy good. Connie Britton and Kyle Chandler are the foundation – their relationship as Coach Taylor and wife Tami somehow coming across as truthful and idyllic at the same time–and all the other talented young actors just add to the depth, beauty, and authenticity of the story of the people in this little Texas football town. The actors are allowed to stray from the script so the words seem from the heart or off the cuff and real. The show is shot in and around real places in Austin, there are artificial sets. It is shot handheld with three cameras rolling and the resulting scenes are so intimate, it really doesn’t feel like a tv show at all.
This season will rip your heart out. The kids are getting older, thinking about life after Dillon. Some of them have already moved on. A few adults are added to the cast that you may recognize from more successful shows. I am begging you to watch it, tell your friends to watch it, and send a prayer out into the universe that somehow I will get to touch it in some way before its end.
