My friend and Frog Prince co-hort, Andrea Smith, is the force behind this wonderful event. Andrea explained to me that there is a frequent and unfortunate occurrence during childbirth in young mothers in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia called Obstetric Fistula. This usually results in the child being stillborn. The further tragedy of this event, is that afterward, the women are often shunned from their communities. Frequently, they fall into depression and poverty. The saddest thing about all of this is that the minor surgery required to correct the problem costs so little. The dark trajectory of a young woman’s entire life after childbirth could be prevented for as little as $100.
To draw attention to this cause, Andrea and North by Northwest Theatre, The Sessions Austin & The McCallum Fine Arts Academy, are staging a benefit around The Vagina Monologues. 100% (!!!) of the proceeds go to OperationOF
OperationOF is an Austin-based, social nonprofit, helping women in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia, who have been marginalized by their communities and ostracized by their families because they suffer from Obstetric Fistula. OperationOF works tirelessly to help these women get the surgery they need, in addition to teaching them a skill, and providing them with micro-finance, so they may return to their lives with a renewed sense of self-worth.
Every night a different Austin music artist or act will perform as well. Please visit the website for tickets and for more information about this worthwhile cause.
